James Ellie Barnes, 75, volunteered for WHQR radio

James Ellie Barnes, 75, of Wilmington, passed away on Saturday, June 18, 2016. He was born in Rich Square on August 25, 1940, to the late Lowell and Miriam Barnes.

James graduated from Rocky Mount High School. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard and volunteered for WHQR Radio Station, Wilmington. Mr. Barnes loved classical music and jazz. He was a longtime resident of Wilmington and devoted husband to his wife, Marsha, and pet dog, Kiwi.

He is survived by his wife, Marsha LeMay Barnes; sister, Mary Hebblethwaite (John); aunt, Enola Brown; and several cousins.

A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 23, at Wrightsville Beach United Methodist Church.

The family wishes to thank Lower Cape Fear Hospice; special caregivers, Frank and Peggy Efird; Wrightsville Beach United Methodist Church; and James’ neighborhood friends.
