Barbara Muldoon Proctor, 64, of Wilmington died Saturday, June 18, 2016, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice.

Mrs. Proctor was born in Washington, D.C., March 4, 1952, to John Joseph and Mary Muldoon. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in English and French from Wake Forest University, and she passionately taught both subjects to thousands of middle and upper school students at Cape Fear Academy for the last 34 years. There, she was the director of the Writing Center and adviser to the Judiciary Council at the time of her death, but had also served as the head of the English department in the past.

Mrs. Proctor will be remembered for her relentless and unending devotion to her teaching career. She was a treasured mentor, counselor and advocate to her students. She often happily recalled the many times she had the privilege of leading students on trips to Washington, D.C., New York and France. Mrs. Proctor was deeply invested in their academic and personal successes, and the connections she made with her students during the last three decades enriched their lives and hers to the very end.

She had a true love of learning, which she instilled in her students. Mrs. Proctor was a voracious reader with a sharp mind, who thrilled in engaging in meaningful conversations about literature, politics and Wilmington, the city she called home since 1982. She richly valued her time living in a growing and dynamic community, where she was also a devoted employee at The Fisherman’s Wife during the summer months. Some of Mrs. Proctor’s fondest Wilmington memories occurred on Halloween, a holiday that allowed her to wear goofy hats and trade jokes with young trick-or-treaters. She also enjoyed countless relaxing and restful moments with her feet in the sand at Wrightsville Beach with family and friends.

Mrs. Proctor married her husband, Graham, in 2008. A lover of dogs her entire life, she then became a self-proclaimed ‘cat lady,’ caring for four strays who were attracted to her caring and loving nature.

She was preceded in death by her father, John Muldoon.

She is survived by her husband, Graham Proctor of Wilmington; mother, Mary Muldoon of Silver Spring, Md.; sister, Maureen Donohue of Lenoir; nephew, Colin Donohue of Burlington; niece, Kaitlin Donohue of Centreville, Va.; great-nephew, Kai Donohue of Burlington; and many in-laws and loving friends.

A visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, June 25, at Andrews Mortuary & Crematory, 1617 Market St., Wilmington.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you offer donations to Cape Fear Academy, Barbara Proctor Memorial Scholarship; or sending contributions to the attention of Paula Sneeden, 3900 S. College Road, Wilmington, NC 28412.
