Miriam ‘Mike’ Ashe Gault Holt, 99, of Wilmington and formerly of Lake Waccamaw, died on Thursday, June 16, 2016, at Davis Community Healthcare Center. She was born in Wilmington, the daughter of Francis Beers Gault and Susie Bell LaMotte Gault on November 20, 1916.
Mike was a devoted wife, mother, sister and grandmother. She obtained a B.S. in 1939 from Women’s College (UNC-Greensboro) and took additional coursework as a lifelong learner. She was a professional educator in English, physical education, health and special education. She was certified as an airplane pilot, and she was an award-winning artist. She was a dedicated member of the Episcopal Church. She served on various community boards and received the New Hanover County Health Care Hero Volunteer of the Year award in 2014 at age 98.
Mike was preceded in death by her parents; husband, the Rev. Sidney S. Holt; brothers, Charles B. Gault and Frank A. Gault; and sister, Mary L. Gault.
She is survived by her sons, Michael L. Holt, and his wife, Catherine, of Greensboro and Donnell A. Holt, and his wife Connie, of Elm City; grandsons, James Holt, and his wife, Sheeja, of Ellicott City, Md., Joel Holt of Glenville, N.Y., Dave Holt of Rhinelander, Wis., Walker S. Holt of Wilmington and Thompson J. Holt of Wilson; granddaughter, Beth H. Davidson, and her husband, Ralph, of Alberta, Canada; and eight great-grandchildren.
A service to celebrate her life will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, June 20, at the chapel of The Davis Community, Wilmington. The Rev. Nan Chandler will officiate services. A visitation will follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Davis Community, 1011 Porters Neck Road, Wilmington, NC 28411; All Souls Episcopal Church, 5087 Blue Banks Loop Road, Leland, NC 28451; or the charity of your choice.
