John Foster ‘Papa Mac’ McMurtie Jr., 85, owned and operated Monogram Shop in Pompano Beach for 40 years

John Foster ‘Papa Mac’ McMurtie Jr., 85, of Hampstead and formerly of Pompano Beach, Fla., passed away on Tuesday, June 14, 2016, at Woodbury Wellness Nursing Home in Pender County. He was born on June 25, 1930, in Bethlehem, Pa.

He was the son of the late John F. and Florence McMurtrie. John lived with his companion, Rita Roy Phinney of Wilmington, for 44 years.

For over 40 years, John owned and operated the Monogram Shop in Pompano Beach. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Miami. He also served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.

He is survived by four sons, Gregg McMurtrie of Las Vegas, Nev., John McMurtrie of Ohio, James McMurtrie of Florida and Brian McMurtrie. John is also survived by his extended family of over 40 years, Linda and Steve Walker of Wilmington, Merry and Randy McCulloch of Leland, Laurie and Gary Augustin of Lake City, Fla., Ronald and Jean Phinney of Wilkesboro and Karen McDougal of Jacksonville. Papa Mac’s grandchildren are Lindsay McMurtrie of Las Vegas, Nev., Sarah and Quinton Ladd of Charlotte, Brian Walker, and his fiance, Amy Barbera, of Wilmington, Scott Walker, and his fiance, Julie Primm, of Hampstead, Stephanie (Walker), and her husband, Zach Bagwell, of Raleigh and Kara Ricks, and her daughter, Estell, of Burgaw.

A private service will be held at the convenience of the family.
