Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame awards student scholarships

Each year the Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame (GWSHOF) honors four people for their excellence in the world of sports within the Greater Wilmington area by inducting them into its Hall of Fame.

The Great Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame has awarded more than 40 student scholarships since its inception.

As part of the induction festivities, each class selects a high school or college to which four scholarships are awarded, while the school’s administration chooses one student to receive the money toward their education. The student-athlete recipients were awarded their $2,000 scholarships at the GWSHOF Induction Banquet held this spring.

The 2016 induction class included: Gwen Austin, John Bunting, Larry Honeycutt and Charlie “Barrell” Niven. 

Scholarship recipients were: Bailey Katherine Davis (Wallace-Rose Hill), Steven Crowell (Topsail), Terrence Connelly (UNCW) and Tyrek Speller (New Hanover).

More than 40 area students have benefited from the induction ceremony each year as part of GWSHOF Bill Dooley Scholarship Program..
