Sharon Purvis Oakes, 58, entered heaven peacefully on Sunday, June 5, 2016, surrounded by her family, at Duke University Medical Center, Durham.
Sharon was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and aunt. She was at her best when she was helping family or friends. She had a gift of being able to share a conversation with people she met in all walks of life. It brought her great joy just to connect. Sharon enjoyed shopping trips and any time spent at the beach. She was a graduate of Appalachian State University and a retired real estate appraiser for New Hanover County.
She will be greatly missed, but was reunited with her twin sister, Karen, who preceded her in death. Sharon was a daughter of the late Dewitt and Sylvia Horner Purvis.
Sharon is survived by her husband, William ‘Billy’ Oakes; daughter, Vanessa Williams, and her husband, Mark; son, Andrew Oakes, and his wife, Megan; grandson, Gunnar; sister, Geraldine Boyd, and her husband, Billy; and several nieces, nephews and many friends.
Funeral services will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday, June 9, at Calvary Baptist Church, Robbins, with the Dr. Bill Cooper, the Rev. Brad Harrison and the Rev. Robert L. Kidd officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 3 p.m. and other times at the home.
Sharon’s family would like to remind everyone to consider the “gift of life” through organ donation. It changes more than one life.
