Brenda Gail Quashne, 66, of Southport, passed away on Sunday, June 5, 2016, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Quashne was born July 17, 1949, in Asheville, the daughter of the late John and Elbreeda Maples. She was a received a bachelor’s degree from East Carolina University and a master’s degree from Wilmington University. Mrs. Quashne retired after 30 years teaching elementary school children in the Colonial School District in New Castle, Del.

In addition to teaching, she worked with Delaware and New Jersey state police in raising money to support the Sunshine Foundation, providing trips to terminally ill children from the state of Delaware. She and her husband moved to Southport in 2004, where she was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Spending time at the Oak Island Senior Center, Brenda learned to weave Nantucket-style baskets, and enjoyed it so much, she expanded her hobby and sold her baskets in shops in Shallotte, Southport and Wilmington.

Brenda was also instrumental in organizing many Marine Corps-related events in St. James, including the Marine Corps Fellowship Golf Outing, which placed 50 Marines with St. James military veteran golfers. At Thanksgiving, she organized meals in the homes of St. James residents for more than 100 Marines as part of the Single Marine Program.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter Mary Francis Quashne.

Brenda is survived by her husband of 45 years, Richard ‘Rick’ Quashne Jr.; son, Richard ‘Rich’ Quashne III, and his wife, Laura, of Wilmington, Del.; and two grandchildren, Katharina Alane Quashne and Alexander Richard Quashne.

A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 9, at Peacock, Newnam & White Funeral and Cremation Service. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at noon Friday, June 10, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the Rev. Trent Watts officiating.  A celebration of life will be held on Friday, June 17, at Mealey Funeral Home in Wilmington, Del.
