Sarah Harrelson Surles, 84, of Wilmington, passed away at her home on Friday, June 3, 2016, surrounded by her family. She was born in Columbus County on April 21, 1932, daughter of the late James Cornelius Harrelson and Jennie Williams Harrelson.

After graduating from Williams Township High School, she moved to Wilmington with her cousin, Ora Lee. It was while working in Wilmington that she met her husband, Emerson. She was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church for over 60 years, where she was the financial secretary until retirement. Sarah loved working in her yard, and she especially loved sharing plants that she had rooted with family and friends. She was a wonderful cook and accomplished seamstress. Her unconditional love for family, her unwavering belief in God and devotion to her church were hallmarks of her life. She was loved by all who met her.

Surviving are her husband of 61 years, Emerson Surles; children, Denise Strong (Freddie), Terry Lynn Fleck (Dennis) and Emerson M. Surles Jr. (Marnie); grandchildren, Ashley Strong Gillespie, Brittany Strong, Anna Fleck, Bradley Fleck, Paul Fleck, Daniel Fleck, Julian Surles and Ian Surles; great-grandchildren, Ava Grace Gillespie, Sophia Gillespie and Ella Strong; siblings, Clara Mae Hewitt, Carol Jean Storch and Russell Harrelson (Mary); and her best friend of 66 years, Ruth Russell.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 6, at Calvary Baptist Church, officiated by Dr. Donnie Lovette. The family will receive friends at the church from 1 p.m. until the service hour. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Wilmington.

The family would like to thank her doctors, Dr. Andre Leonard, Dr. Billy McNulty and Dr. John Harshbarger, for their special care and attention.
