George Augustus ‘Gus’ Howell III, 65, died Wednesday, June 1, 2016, from complications related to multiple sclerosis, a disease he had fought for over 30 years.

He was born in Rockingham, on April 24, 1951, and graduated from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill with a B.S. in business administration in 1973. He began his professional career with The Charlotte Observer as a relief manager with the Charlotte News.

He and his wife, Gladys Carowan Howell, raised their two sons, George Augustus Howell IV and Bennett Carowan Howell, in Charlotte. He retired from The Charlotte Observer as the director of circulation distribution on December 31, 2000, relocating to Washington in 2001. He was an active member of Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church in Charlotte and was consistently involved in his community.

In 2014, his disease required full-time support at the Davis Community in Wilmington, where he died.

Gus was preceded in death by his father, George Augustus Howell Jr., and mother, Mary Aiken Howell, both of Rockingham; and two half-sisters, Lotta Jeanne Cameron and Lola Teubert.

In addition to his wife and sons, he will also be missed by his sister, Georgia Howell Brown; five grandchildren and other family and friends.

Please join his family for a celebration of life from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 5, at the Hilton Wilmington Riverside, Magnolia Room, 301 N. Water St., Wilmington.

Special thanks for the love and support of the Davis Community.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to your local food bank, one of Gus’ favorite charities.
