The body of a 21-year-old man who went missing off the coast of Carolina Beach over the Memorial Day weekend has been found in Kure Beach.

According to Carolina Beach Police Detective Scott Hettinger, emergency personnel responded to the 800 block of South Fort Fisher Boulevard just after 8 p.m. Tuesday and confirmed a body found in the water was that of James Cameron, a swimmer who went missing from Carolina Beach on Saturday.

Local and federal authorities responded to a swimmer in distress call at about 7 p.m. Saturday. Cameron, of Graham, was reported missing in the ocean in the area of the Carolina Beach boardwalk at Harper Avenue. His body was found approximately 3.5 miles south of the point he was last seen, Hettinger said.

Authorities have been on active search for Cameron over the last three days, Hettinger said. Carolina Beach police and fire recently modified their search for Cameron on Tuesday afternoon to a “recovery operation” after searches were conducted by land, air and sea. The U.S. Coast Guard and New Hanover County Fire Department aided the search effort.

Cameron’s next of kin have been notified, Hettinger said. His body will be transported to the N.C. Medical Examiner’s Office in Jacksonville for an autopsy.
