Lyman A. Smith Jr., 85, passed away Sunday, May 22, 2016. He was born November 2, 1930 in Portsmouth, Va., son of the late Lyman A. and Edith Ozment Smith.

He graduated from Woodrow Wilson high school in Portsmouth in 1949. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1951 and served as a paratrooper during the Korean Conflict. Upon his discharge in 1954, he attended RPI College in Richmond, Va. He and his family moved to Wilmington in 1965, where he was associated with Rose’s store. He retired from the North Carolina State Ports Authority. After retiring from the Ports, he worked for Enterprise for 17 years as a driver. Lyman was a member of the Winter Park Baptist Church, Wilmington Lodge No. 319 A.F. & A.M., and the Sudan Shrine.

Lyman enjoyed going to reunions with his old Army buddies, 11th Airborne Division, and traveling with his friends, Bill and Mary Tuttle. Lyman loved maintaining a beautiful yard with his flowers and birdhouses. He was especially proud of all his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; he cherished each visit.

He is survived by his loving and caring wife of 53 years, Margaret Smith; sons, Richard T. Burwell (Sandra), Michael A. Smith (Trudy) and Linwood B. Smith (Monica), all of Wilmington; daughter, Cathy Hammett (Bill) of Newport News, Va., and 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A special thank you to Dr. Wertheimer and Janie Kennedy for all the care and support during his illness. Also, a very special thank you to the nursing staff on the 5th and 10th floors at NHRMC for their compassionate care of Lyman.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 25, at Andrews Valley Chapel with the Rev. Eric Porterfield and the Rev. Mark Teachey officiating. Prior to the service at the funeral home, the family will receive friends from 2 p.m. until the service hour.
