A substitute teacher at South Brunswick Middle School has been fired after he was charged with an assault on a 12-year-old student.

Peter Jay Julicher, 70, of Coventry Court in Southport, was charged with misdemeanor simple assault in an incident that occurred around noon Wednesday at the middle school located at 100 Cougar Road in Southport, according to Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Spokeswoman Emily Flax.

Julicher was charged with pulling and pushing on the 12-year-old male victim, according to arrest warrants. Brunswick County Schools Spokeswoman Jessica Swencki said the victim in the case was a student at the middle school who had been in one of the classes for which Julicher was the substitute.

Julicher was hired as a substitute with the school system on May 6. He was fired on Wednesday, Swencki said.

Flax said Julicher turned himself in to the custody of the sheriff’s office without incident. He was booked at the Brunswick County Detention Facility under a $1,000 unsecured bond and released Wednesday.
