Wilmington police are investigating after a man was struck by a vehicle while he was sitting in the roadway.

A vehicle struck the man in the area of McRae and Hanover streets at about 2:40 p.m. Wednesday, according to Wilmington Police Department Spokeswoman Cathryn Lindsay.

The vehicle, driven by a woman, was traveling south down McRae Street, when she made a left turn headed east onto Hanover Street and struck the pedestrian sitting in the roadway, Lindsay said. The man was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center to be treated for serious injuries.

Neither the victim nor the driver of the vehicle was identified Wednesday afternoon. Impairment and speed on part of the driver are not suspected to be factors in the crash, Lindsay said.

The wreck shut down traffic on McRae Street between Campbell and Fanning streets, for about one hour Wednesday afternoon. The incident is under investigation, Lindsay said, and no charges have been filed in the case at this time.
