Track athletes punch ticket to state meet, North Brunswick boys claim 2A East region

Nearly two dozen track and field programs competed at the 4A East Regional over the weekend at Ashley High School in Monkey Junction.

Coming off their Mideastern Conference Championship, the Ashley boys put in another strong performance with a third-place finish, while individuals and relay teams punched their ticket to the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 4A Championship.

The top four finishers from each event qualified from the regional to the state meet, which is set for Saturday, May 21 at North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro.

Russell Corbett paced the Screaming Eagles’ effort, with first place finishes in shot put and discus. Dakota Spurley qualified for states with a fourth-place effort in the 3,200 meter run. Marshall Croom was also runner-up in the high jump, while Corey Whaley took fourth in long jump. In the pole vault event, Daniel Suggs took top honors and Luka Abraham claimed second.

Laney sprinter Deshawn Ballard also had a big day by claiming top spot on the podium in 100 meter dash and 200 meter dash. Robinson Snider (Hoggard) and Jamie Witmer (Hoggard) finished first and third, respectively, in the 3,200 meter run. Jack Markovich, Will Parker, Henry Kunz and Shaffer Lisle grabbed first in the 4X800 meter relay.

In the girls competition, Autumn James shined for New Hanover with first-place finishes in high jump and triple jump. Natalie Tyner also continued a breakout freshman year for Laney by claiming top spot in the 3,200 meter run.

All four Wilmington schools will have representatives heading to Greensboro later this week.

In the 3A East Regional, South Brunswick had three top four finishers as Jelonnie Smith, Kim Williams and Anna Shelton advanced to this weekend’s state championship meet. Topsail will send their 4X800 meter relay team, while Xavier Gause will compete in triple jump for West Brunswick.

North Brunswick also continued to dominate within the 2A classification. The Scorpions have qualifiers heading to the final meet of the spring in 14 different events.

The North Brunswick boys claimed the 2A East Regional Championship thanks to a handful of first place finishes by Cameron Barnhill (100 meter dash), Jayhlen Washington (110 meter hurdles/long jump/triple jump), Tyrone Watson (discus), Keandre Yeoman (300 meter hurdles), in addition to the 4X100 and 4X200 meter relay teams.
