Mattie Belle Johnson, 96, passed away in her sleep the morning of Monday, May 16, 2016, in Hampstead. Mattie Belle was born July 6, 1919, in Dawson, Ga., During World War II, she served stateside in the Signal Corps.

She is survived by her husband, retired U.S. Air Force Col. J.T. Johnson; and her two sons, Jim and Dan.

She was an extraordinary partner in J.T.’s long Air Force career, which included numerous stations in the U.S. and abroad. In retirement, she was a driving force for maintaining squadron reunions of World War II Air Force veterans into the 2000’s.

A private memorial service for Mattie Belle will be held at Andrews Hampstead Chapel, Hampstead.
