Jane Eva ‘Janey’ Sapp Van De Car, 71, passed away on Thursday, May 12, 2016.
Jane, oftentimes lovingly referred to as ‘Janey,’ was born on August 24, 1944, to Malcom B. and Edith L. (Masencup) Sapp in Winston-Salem. She was a graduate of Winston-Salem’s Reynolds High School and received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from East Carolina University in Greenville.
She went on to become a captain in the U.S. Air Force and served as a nurse on Cam Rahn Base in Khanh Hoa, Vietnam, during the Vietnam War from 1969 to 1970. Following her service, she married and began her family in St. Louis, Mo., while continuing to serve in various nursing capacities for the Veteran’s Administration. She became an active member with the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 794. Upon retirement, she returned to North Carolina to be close to family and the coast in Wilmington.
Jane enjoyed reading, gardening, her pets and spending time at the beach with family. She was a compassionate and loving mother, sister, daughter, aunt and friend with an infectious sense of humor and laugh. She was generous and giving of her time and love to all those she met and will be dearly missed and remembered.
She was the beloved mother of Ryan S. Van De Car (Margaret B.) and Jill A. Van De Car; sister of Bennett B. Sapp (Raye); aunt of Corben I. Sapp (Ashley H.) and Andrea L. Saurage; great-aunt of Betsy, Bennett, Evan, Lindley and Claire; and a dear friend to many.
The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday, May 17, at Wilmington Funeral & Cremation Chapel, 1535 S. 41st St., Wilmington. A committal service will follow at 2 p.m. in Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, 110 Montford Landing Road. A presentation of military honors will be rendered in recognition of Jane’s honorable and faithful service to her country.
While Jane loved flowers, contributions made to your local Humane Society in loving memory of Jane would be greatly appreciated.
