Lena O. ‘Ozell’ Thornburg Champion, 95, loved gardening, sewing and caring for her grandchildren

Lena O. ‘Ozell’ Thornburg Champion, 95, of Wilmington, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 9, 2016, at  Lower Cape Fear Hospice, Wilmington. Ozell was born in Kings Mountain on May 1, 1921, to the late Miller Lee Thornburg and Lydia Hamrick Thornburg.

Ozell was a member of Sunset Baptist Church, Wilmington, for over 60 years. She loved gardening, sewing and taking care of her grandchildren through the years.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, John David ‘J.D.’ Champion; and son, Ronald Lee Champion.

She is survived by her daughter, Linda Champion Jernigan, and her husband, Alton Earl Jernigan, and their three sons, David Jernigan, Robert ‘Bobby’ Jernigan, and his wife, Denise Jernigan, and William ‘Billy’ Jernigan; son, Jerry Champion, and his daughter, Michelle Kelly, and his son, Ray Champion; Joe Champion’s wife, Louise Champion, and daughter, Kimberly Eaves, and her husband, Delwin Eaves, and two sons, Ronald Champion and Thomas W. Champion; and eight grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday May 13, with the Rev. Chris Wooten officiating.

The family would like to thank the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center for their extraordinary care.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Sunset Park Baptist Church or Lower Cape Fear Hospice Foundation, Wilmington.
