LeRoof ‘Buddy’ Poythress, 95, remembered for his wild stories and homemade ice-cream

After 95 happy and healthy years, LeRoof ‘Buddy’ Poythress passed away on Saturday morning, May 7, 2016. Buddy was born in Savannah, Ga., on January 27, 1921.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1939 and served in World War II. He retired from the military in 1959 after earning the rank of chief warrant officer.

A generous and kind man, Buddy lived life fully right to the end. He will always be remembered for his determined and positive approach to life, wild stories and homemade ice-cream. He was an accomplished gardener, an avid traveler and a devoted grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 63 years, Merle Clark Poythress; brother, Joseph Poythress; sister, Martha Poythress Bridges; and grandson, Steven Poythress Jones.

Buddy is survived by his son, Joseph Eugene Poythress, and his wife, Marion; daughter, Settie Poythress Jones, and her husband, Hank; four grandchildren, Hank Jones, and his wife, Melissa, Alex Jones, and his wife, Tabitha, Sara Jones Hollingsworth, and her husband, Mark, and David Jones; nine great-grandchildren, Brianna Jones-Brix, Sam and Clark Jones, Eli, Esther, Hadarah, Joseph, Melchizedek and Tirzah Hollingsworth; and great-great-granddaughter, Isabella Brix.

Visitation will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 11, at Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Service. Funeral services will be held at noon on Thursday, May 12, at St Matthews Lutheran Church.
