The final day of the high school golf season came to a close on Tuesday at the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) 4A Championship.

Playing on the No. 8 course at Pinehurst, New Hanover’s Jackson Tyler delivered a memorable performance to finish his junior campaign by carding a one-under-par, 71, to climb up the leader board in the two-day event.

After posting an even round during day one of the tournament on the Par 72, 6,793-yard layout, Tyler remained steady throughout the final day and sank three birdies on the afternoon. He was two-under along the back nine thanks to consecutive birdies on the Par 4, 381-yard 16th and Par 5, 500-yard 17th hole.

Tyler scored 34 on the back and 37 on the front nine to close at 71, three shots behind the leader to finish third among the 84 individual golfers in the field.

Doc Redman (Leesville Road) captured medalist honors with low score of the day, a three-under, 69. Reeman closed the tournament at minus-four. He and Tyler were two of just three players among 4A competitors to finish under par for the championship.

Three other local golfers knocked strokes off their scorecard from the day prior. Jackson Young (Laney) hit a four-over-par 76 on Tuesday, while Thomas Hill (NHHS) finished with 80, after hitting 83 during the opening round. Michael Jones (Laney) was consistent throughout the tournament, with a pair of 85’s on the board. Despite being out of contention, Coy Shepard played bogey golf during his final round of the spring.

After winning the Mideastern Conference Championship and third-place finish in the east regional to qualify for states, the New Hanover golf team took eighth within the 12 programs competing for the 4A state title.
