Virginia Mae Hayes nee Perrygo, 91, of Rocky Point and formerly of Springfield, Va., passed into eternal peace surrounded by loved ones on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 8, 2016. Virginia was born December 20, 1924, in Prince George’s County, Md.

A longtime employee of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, in retirement, she cherished time with grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a longtime, faithful member of First Baptist Church of Springfield, Va., until her move to North Carolina.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph C. Hayes; parents, Maurice and Lelia Perrygo; siblings, Maurice ‘Bud’ Perrygo, James Perrygo, Robert Perrygo and Margaret Perrygo Ward; and son-in-law, Michael R. Shaffier.

Mrs. Hayes is survived by her daughter, F. Diane Hayes Glenn, and her husband, Michael D. Glenn, of Rocky Point; daughter, Debra Hayes Shaffier of Stafford, Va.; and eight grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

There will be a gathering of family and friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 10, at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home, Burgaw. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, May 12, at Demaine Funeral Home, 5308 Backlick Road, Springfield, Va., with a graveside service in Mount Comfort Cemetery, Alexandria, Va.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made contributing to the Building Fund at Wrightsboro Baptist Church, 2736 Castle Hayne Road, Wilmington, NC 28401; or Thornburg Middle School Band Program, 6929 N. Roxbury Mill Road, Spotsylvania Courthouse, VA 22551.
