Billy Ray Smith, 76, of Wilmington, passed away on Wednesday, May 4, 2016. He was born in Wilmington on August 22, 1939, to the late Marion and Kathleen Smith.

Billy Smith joined his family in heaven on Wednesday, May 4, 2016, after a life filled with love and family. He served his country in the U.S. Army and retired from GE Power of Wilmington after 32 years of employment.

Billy was the most unselfish person known by his family and friends. He would not say ‘no’ to anyone for anything. He would give everything he had if one would only ask. His family was his life, and he worked hard every day to ensure their needs and wants were provided. Billy’s greatest weakness was his grandchildren, as they were his greatest strength. Heaven has gained a wonderful asset, as we have lost an irreplaceable father and grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Marion and Kathleen Smith; brother, Richard Lee Smith; and grandson, William Ray Smith Jr.

He is survived by his three children, Buddy Smith, Sandra Moore and Dennis Smith; grandchildren, Danny Harker, Donald Harker, Devin Harker, Summer Moore, Kelsie Watkins, Alex Smith and Lily Smith; and great-grandchildren, Mariah Harker and Waylon Watkins.

The family will hold a private service on Saturday, May 7, followed by a gathering at 9495 Huckabee Court, Leland, the home of William Smith.
