Police open homicide investigation after gunshot victim dies

Detectives with the Wilmington Police Department have opened a homicide investigation after a shooting victim died in the hospital over the weekend.

Lavar Demond Riley Jr., 32, of Wilmington, died Saturday from an injury he sustained in a shooting reported the day before, according to police spokeswoman Cathryn Linsday. The shooting happened in the 1000 block of Orange Street at about 2:45 a.m. Friday, April 29.

When officers responded to the shooting, they found Riley lying in the grass with a gunshot wound. He was transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where he died.

Witnesses reported that three black males were spotted leaving the scene headed south from the shooting, Lindsay said. The investigation is ongoing.
