Sara Anne Phelps Moretz passed away peacefully and was called to heaven on Wednesday, April 20, 2016, in Virginia Beach, Va. She was born in 1935 to Victor Edward Phelps, an attorney for the Atlantic Coastline Railroad, and Annie Phelps, a railroad secretary at Johns Hopkins Hospital, in Baltimore, Md.
Surviving her are her loving family, her daughter, Catherine Anne Clark; son-in-law Lt. Cmdr. James L. Clark III; and granddaughter, Audrey Colette Clark.
After growing up in Wilmington, she graduated from New Hanover High School in 1953, Lenoir Rhyne College in 1956, Appalachian State Teachers College in 1963 and Florida State University in 1971. Though she earned the title of doctor, she never used it, preferring ‘just Sara.’ She was both a classroom teacher and school administrator for more than 30 years.
Sara married Walter Jennings Moretz Jr. in 1955 and was his loving wife for 40 years. Sara Anne loved history and current events. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Hanover Seaside Club, Wrightsville Beach. Sara Anne spent many years doing extensive genealogical research. She attended the Lutheran church throughout her life. Sara Anne was known for her sharp mind, loving heart, gracious manners, timeless style and enormous, beautiful, blue eyes.
A graveside interment will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, May 7, 2016, in Oakdale Cemetery, Wilmington.
