Local tennis players punch ticket to regional; Mideastern Conference soccer scoreboard

Tennis standouts from across the four Wilmington schools met at the Althea Gibson Tennis Complex on Thursday for the Mideastern Conference Tournament to decide this year’s singles and doubles champion.

Hoggard junior Eddie Janosko claimed the individual title, while New Hanover’s Lucas McLatchy and Wesley Gaines out-dueled teammates Marshal Waren and Taylor Gaines 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 to clinch the doubles crown.

The top three finishers in each event from Thursday qualified for next week’s 4A East Regionals, which will also be held at Empie Park.

New Hanover’s Patrick Senior took third place in singles. Miles Hirchak and Holland Baynard will represent Hoggard in the regional after claiming third-place in doubles play.

Singles

Semifinals: No. 1 Eddie Janosko (H) def. No. 4 Patrick Senior (NH) 7-5, 6-3; No. 2 Zack Taffer (L) def. No. 3 Dom Scialabba (H) 6-4, 7-5.
Finals: No. 1 Janosko (H) def. No. 2 Taffer (L) 6-1, 4-4 (ret.).
Doubles
Semifinals: 
No. 1 Marshall Waren/Taylor Gaines (NH) def. No. 4 Jake Ferner/Tim Dixon 6-0, 6-1; No. 2 Lucas McLatchy /Wesley Gaines (NH) def. No. 3 Miles Hirchak/Holland Baynard (H) 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.
Finals: No. 2 McLatchy/W. Gaines (NH) def. No. 1 Waren/T. Gaines (NH) 6-1, 1-6, 6-2.

 

Soccer

Ashley 7   West Brunswick 0

The Screaming Eagles snapped a three-match winless streak with a dominating 7-0 result against West Brunswick. Ashley moved to 6-4 in conference and 8-6-1 overall.

 South Brunswick 3    Topsail 2

South Brunswick defeated Topsail 3-2 in girls soccer in Hampstead on Thursday night.

Carmen Pyrtle scored both goals for Topsail before exiting the game with an ankle injury in the 55th minute with the score tied at two. Lexi Gilley and Jamie Keisman each had an assist for the Pirates. Victoria Daniel had four saves in goal.

Topsail dropped to 2-8 in the division and 7-9-3 overall.
