Anthony Michael Fazzari, 77, of Wilmington, passed away on Wednesday, April 20, 2016, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington.

Born in Framingham, Mass., Tony was baptized and confirmed in St. Tarcisius Church. Although Sunday school lost out to the family Sunday paper delivery route, Tony was an altar boy for five years at St. Tarcisius and developed an abiding love of the Latin Mass and hymns.

During this period, Tony began what he felt was a lifelong personal relationship with God. He graduated from MIT in 1960 and earned a master’s degree from Purdue University. Tony married Sheila Slezak in 1966 in St. Stanislaus Church in Amsterdam, N.Y., and they had three children, Kirsten Fazzari, Jennifer VanMetre, and her husband, Steven, and David Fazzari, and his fiancée, Megan Affrunti; and three grandchildren, Emma, Elena and Eric.

After a 33-year career with Union Carbide in the chemicals and plastics industry, and 10 years as a marketing consultant, Tony and Sheila moved to Wilmington in 1995, joining Immaculate Conception Church and participating in the growth of the parish and the current facility. Tony served as a Eucharistic minister and as minister to the sick and home-bound.

Tony lost Sheila to cancer in 1999, but was fortunate to find his current wife, Ruth, whom he married here at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in 2004. He also was blessed with Ruth’s two daughters, Jodi Monastra, and her husband, Chuck, and Kristin Nienhuis; and grandchildren, Grace and Jacob. Tony and Ruth volunteered together at the Help Center in Carolina Beach.

A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 22, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. The family will receive friends at 10 a.m. prior to the service hour at the church. Tony will be interred next to Sheila in Amsterdam, N.Y., in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.

Gifts in his memory may be made to the MIT Scholarship Fund, 600 Memorial Drive W98, Cambridge, MA, 02139. Please include #2868000 on the memo line.
