Mary Lou Burhans, 77, active with St. James Vintage Ladies

Mary Lou Burhans, 77, of St. James, passed away on Thursday, April 14, 2016, at the SECU Hospice House of Brunswick. Lou was born January 30, 1939, in Salina, Kansas, the daughter of Leonard Augustine Robey and Olivia Mae Robey. On February 7, 1965, in Cincinnati, Ohio, she was married to Dwayne A. Burhans, who survives.

She attended the University of Missouri, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority. She received her bachelor and master of education degrees in education from Avila University in Cincinnati. She taught elementary grades in the Cincinnati area for 35 years until she retired in 2003.

Lou and Dwayne retired to St. James in 2004, where she enjoyed golf, bridge and reading. She was also active in the St. James Vintage Ladies organization.

In addition to her husband, Dwayne, Lou is survived by her sister, Ann Studer of Cincinnati; nieces, Joan Price, Nancy Garver and Amy Schaljo; and nephew, Mark Studer.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, April 18, at the Peacock-Newnam & White Funeral Home Chapel, with Father Doug Lawson officiating. Interment will be in Cincinnati at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the SECU, Hospice House of Brunswick, 955 Mercy Lane, Bolivia, NC 28422.
