Casey Golden hit a leadoff home run in the sixth and Steven Linkous put the Seahawks in front for good later in the frame as UNCW edged William & Mary 2-1 in a Colonial Athletic Association series opener on Friday at Plumeri Park in Williamsburg, Va.
The Seahawks improved to 3-2 in the conference and 17-9 overall. The Tribe, meanwhile, dropped to 15-14 and 4-2 with their second straight loss.
William & Mary held a 1-0 lead until UNCW rallied for two as Golden belted his third home run of the season to start the inning. Linkous came up clutch with a two-out single to left to plate Zack Canada from second base for the go-ahead run as the Seahawks grabbed back-to-back road wins following the mid-week win at Campbell.
UNCW starter Ryan Foster (5-2) allowed a run in the first, but sailed through the next six innings of work, allowing five hits, with six strikeouts. Jared Gesell notched his third save of the season.
Linkous was the only player to have multiple hits in the pitchers’ duel.
The Seahawks and Tribe play the middle game of the series on Saturday at 4 p.m.
