Ralph ‘Dan’ Dever, 92, of Wilmington, died Monday, April 4, 2016, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice Center. Born April 5, 1923, in Lakewood, Ohio, he was a son of the late Ralph E. Dever and Anne Skellum Dever.
Dan graduated from Ohio University with a bachelor of science in engineering. He was the owner of a steel fabrication company. He served in the U.S. Navy as a fighter pilot in World War II and the Korean Conflict. He belonged to the Masons as well as the local Air Force Pilots Association.
In his leisure, he enjoyed swimming, boating, golfing and traveling. He was an exceptional gardener, with a special interest in his roses.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Sibyl Siddell Dever; a son, R.E. Dever III; and a granddaughter, Megan Betz.
He is survived by his children, Diane Betz (Ted) of Farmingdale, N.J., Scott Dever of Annapolis, Md., and Laurie Dever of Richmond, Va.; grandchildren, Carin McMullen (Daniel) of Yardley, Pa., Douglas Dever (Robin) of North Royalton, Ohio, Jennifer Rosenfeld (Erik) of Solon, Ohio, and Thomas Dever (Meredith) of Fairview Park, Ohio; and his great-grandchildren, Emerson and Ben McMullen of Yardley, Pa., and Emily and Kelsey Rosenfeld of Solon, Ohio.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, April 29, at Andrews Valley Chapel, 4108 S. College Road, Wilmington, NC 28412.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Dan’s name to Shriners Hospitals for Children, 2900 N. Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607; or Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1414 Physicians Dr., Wilmington, NC 28401.
