Jessie Lord Parkerson, 87, moved home to be with her Lord on Tuesday, April 5, 2016, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice. Jessie was born in Dublin, Ga., on March 19, 1929, the youngest of six children to Arthur J. Lord and Adell S. Lord.
Jessie married her pastor, Del E. Parkerson, on August 18, 1951, and together they served the Lord for 61 years. They moved to North Carolina in August 1953 when Del began his graduate theological training at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest. It was her firm conviction that God had called her to serve Him as a pastor’s wife. In her role as a pastor’s wife, she served the Lord with great dedication and distinction throughout her entire life.
She was an excellent Sunday School teacher for well over 50 years, developed a special training program for young women in how to study the Bible, and conducted well-attended seminars for more than 20 years dealing with the dangers posed by occultism. She was greatly loved by the members of every church where she and her husband served. “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.” (Psalms 116:15)
She was preceded in death by her parents, all of her siblings and by infant twin sons in 1960.
She is survived by her husband, Del Parkerson; her daughter, Gail Herring, and her husband, Chip Herring; grandson, Josh Herring, and his wife, Amy Lace Herring, and their three children, Kai, Hallie and Rebecca Herring; and 10 nieces and nephews, their spouses and children.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 8, at Temple Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Steve Spangler, recently retired pastor of Temple Baptist Church, and Dr. Mike Queen, retired pastor of First Baptist Church. A visitation time in the church fellowship hall will follow the memorial service. A private interment service will take place Saturday, April 9, in Oleander Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be given to The Women’s Roundtable at East Carolina University Honors College Endowed Scholarship Fund. Checks may be made to Women’s Roundtable at ECU Foundation Inc. Please send checks in care of Stephanie Bunn, 2200 S. Charles Blvd., Greenville, NC 27858, and state in memory of Jessie Parkerson. Memorials may also be made to Temple Baptist Church.
The family would like to thank the staff at Lower Cape Fear Hospice for their phenomenal care in our deepest hours of need. Their care of Jessie was tender, dignified and attentive to her every need, and they made her transition painless and seamless. We especially want to thank Amber, the nurse who was with us at those final moments…You are an angel.
