Pending school board approval, South Brunswick High School has found its new head football coach as Rocky Lewis has been recommended to the board of education for the position.
Lewis has a strong and diverse coaching background both at the high school and collegiate ranks. In his 23-year career, Lewis has made stops at East Carolina University, Appalachian State University, and North Carolina A&T University, where he spent much of his time coaching quarterbacks and wide receivers. He also worked as the offensive coordinator at Chowan University.
“I’m excited about the opportunity to lead the South Brunswick football program,” said Lewis. “I understand the challenge of being in a tough conference and recent struggles, but look forward to developing our program into a consistent, tough opponent to face each Friday night.”
Lewis spent the last two seasons as varsity football coach and athletics director at East Columbus High School. His prep experience began as an assistant coach at Clinton High School under his father, legendary Coach Bob Lewis, before taking over at East Columbus in June 2014.
In addition to his coaching duties, Lewis will also serve as a health/physical education teacher at South Brunswick.
He takes over for Daniel Finn, who served as South Brunswick head coach for the past two seasons. Finn stepped down from the position in January to reunite with Southeast Raleigh High School, where he spent nearly a decade as head of the football program. The Cougars went 2-9 and 4-8 during Finn’s tenure in Brunswick County.
