Diamond Hawks begin eight-game road trip with setback to nationally ranked East Carolina

Junior pitcher Jacob Wolfe gave East Carolina a strong 6.1 innings on the mound and Eric Tyler added four hits as the Pirates dealt UNCW a 9-6 loss on Tuesday at LeClair Stadium in Greenville.

The Pirates improved to 17-8 with the win, while the Seahawks dropped to 15-7 after having their six-game winning streak halted.

Wolfe (3-2) picked up the win, finishing with five strikeouts and no walks. At one point the left-hander retired nine straight Seahawks between the third and sixth innings. Joe Ingle nailed down his fifth save of the season.

East Carolina built a 6-1 lead through four innings and never looked back. The Pirates pushed three across in the second as Justin Crump opened the inning with a hit batter, a walk and a single. All three hitters scored.

Steven Linkous and Casey Golden led UNCW with three hits apiece. Crump (1-1) took the loss for the Seahawks, surrendering one run on four hits over five innings.

UNCW fell to 0-5 on the road this season. Nick Feight extended his hitting streak to 16 games with a two-run double in the eighth inning

The Seahawks visit Northeastern when it returns to conference play on Friday with a 3 p.m. start.
