Roy Russell ‘Rickey’ McDowell II, 71, passed away Monday, March 28, 2016, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center after a lengthy illness.
He worked for the A&P Stores for 23 years; owned McDowell’s Clam House with his wife, Elsie, for 18 years; and was a commercial fisherman.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy Russell McDowell Sr. and Anne McDowell Putnam; and brother, Zane Russell McDowell.
He leaves behind his wife of 36 years, Elsie; daughter, Tina McDowell (Eddie) Clemmons; son, Henry Russell Smith; and two grandchildren, Eric Clemmons and Andrew Smith. Also surviving are his brother, John (Elda) McDowell; sister, Kathy (Bob) Bennett; nieces, Caroline (Carl) Autry, Roxsanne (Rick) Rusher and April (Owen) Turner; nephew, Jason Autry; great-nephew, Lance Autry; stepchildren, Darlene Pennington, Johnny (Robin) Hodgeson, Denise (Ron) Ellis and Juanita Smith Hodges; step-grandchildren, Zachary Pennington, Clay, Kyle and Chris Hodgeson, Lindzy McDonald, Kristen Taylor, Katlyn and Lucas Ellis and Sarah and Rachael Hodges; and step-great grandchildren, Lily and Gideon Ellis.
Visitation with the family will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 1, at Andrews Valley Chapel on College Road, Wilmington. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 2, at Federal Point Cemetery on Dow Road, Carolina Beach. The family will receive friends at 302 Santa Ana Drive, Wilmington, after graveside the graveside service.
