Arthur Preston Minchew, 84, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, March 22, 2016. He was born July 22, 1931, in Willacoochee, Ga., a son of the late Archie and Evelyn Minchew.

Art was a U.S. Air Force veteran and had an eventful 35-year career at IBM within the Federal Systems Division, contributing to the success of the NASA Apollo Program and the Triton Sonar Program.

He loved aviation and became an accomplished pilot, which later inspired his son to earn a commercial pilot license. He enjoyed being an amateur ham radio operator and talking to people across the world in the early 1960s. After retirement, he acquired a brokerage license from Merrill Lynch and worked as a trader at the World Trade Center in New York City.

He and his loving wife of 27 years, Arlene, settled down in Wilmington, where they worked together as a team, building Ropa Etc. clothing stores. He enjoyed traveling abroad with his family, especially to Germany, but he was proud to call Wilmington home. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather.

We all have our own experiences with his unfiltered views on life, and we will continue to share these stories going forward. We love you dad and you will be greatly missed.

Art’s family will receive relatives and friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 25, at Wilmington Funeral & Cremation, 1535 S. 41st St., Wilmington. Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday, March 26, at the chapel of Wilmington Funeral & Cremation. Interment will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.
