USA Baseball National High School Invitational
Trinity Christian 7 Topsail 0
The Topsail ball club got a taste of top-level high school baseball from Florida on Wednesday morning as Trinity Christian (Jacksonville, Fla.) handed the Pirates a 7-0 defeat during the opening day of the USA Baseball National High School Invitational (NHSI) in Cary.
Trinity Christian wasted no time at the plate and took advantage of some early control problems for Topsail starting pitcher Payton Phelps. JC Flowers led off the game with a single and moved to second after Austin Martin walked. Todd Lott followed with an RBI single to put Trinity Christian in front 1-0. A sacrifice bunt attempt turned into a base hit to load the bases and a free pass issued to Angel Acosta forced in a run for the early lead.
Trinity Christian put up five more in the second as Lott helped the cause with a two-run double. The three hitter finished with three runs batted in, while a two-out single by Parker Aman capped the rally.
Aaron Beach tripled in the third for Topsail’s first hit of the game, but the Pirates left a pair of runners stranded in scoring position. The black and gold threatened again in the fourth after Chase Riker singled to put runners on first and third, but Trinity went to the bullpen and induced a grounder to third for the final out of the inning.
With Riker due up and Sam Hall on third, a pick-off at first to close the sixth ended the final attempt for Topsail to get on the board. William St. Ledger was solid in relief for the Pirates and Alex Holland tossed a scoreless seventh with the help of a 4-6-3 double play.
Topsail continues play at the USA Baseball Complex on Thursday. The Pirates are guaranteed three more games at this year’s NHSI.
