Detectives with the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office are searching for the identity of a man found dead in the Intracoastal Waterway on Wednesday morning.

Fishermen found the man floating in the water behind Figure Eight Island and south of the Figure Eight Island Bridge, according to sheriff’s office spokesman Lt. Jerry Brewer. The fishermen contacted the U.S. Coast Guard at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The sheriff’s office detectives responded and a death investigation is underway, Brewer said. The man’s identity is unknown.

He is described as a white male between 40 and 50 years old, who is about 180 to 200 pounds. The man is balding with possible brown or gray hair, with a beard and mustache. He wore a grey long-sleeved shirt and black athletic pants with a white stripe down each side of the pant legs.

The man’s cause of death will be determined upon autopsy, Brewer said. Investigators have estimated the body has been in the water between 24 and 36 hours.
