Joseph Dyson, Jr., age 91, a longtime resident of Wilmington, died on Saturday, March 19, 2016. Mr. Dyson was born on March 23, 1924, in Columbus County to Joseph Dyson Sr. and Nellie Hazel Walker Dyson.
Mr. Dyson retired from Carolina Power and Light Company after a 36-year career with the company. During World War II, Mr. Dyson worked as a welder on Liberty ships built in the Wilmington Shipyard. In 1944, Mr. Dyson married Dorothy DeBose Dyson, to whom he remained married until her death on January 24, 2009.
Mr. Dyson is survived by his sons, William Lee Dyson, and his wife, Persis Mercer Dyson, of Hillsborough and Michael Ryan Dyson, and his wife, Mary Anne Morgan Dyson, of Raleigh; five grandchildren, Blythe Ellie Dyson Ardyson and Blake Ashley Dyson (children of William Lee Dyson), and Susan Michelle Dyson Hayes, Cheri Marie Dyson Dara and Clark William Dyson (children of Michael Ryan Dyson); seven great-grandchildren, Adah Rose Ardyson and Walker Lee Ardyson (children of Blythe Ellie Dyson Ardyson), Morgan Elise Hayes, Erin Deanne Hayes, and Luke Christopher Hayes (children of Susan Michelle Dyson Hayes), and Noah Ryan Peter Dara and Ava Anne Dara (children of Cheri Marie Dyson Dara); sister, Doris Dyson Smith of Whiteville; brother, William Kenneth Walker of Lumberton; and half-sister, Ruby Dyson Miller of Whiteville.
The funeral services for Mr. Dyson will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 25, in the chapel of Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Home, 3915 Oleander Drive, Wilmington.
