Fueled by a combined eight hits and 12 runs batted in from Brian Mims, Gavin Stupienski and Nick Feight, UNCW posted a season-high for runs scored in a 19-7 win over visiting Iona at Brooks Field on Sunday.
The Seahawks finished off the sweep of the Gaels to improve to 12-6. Iona, meanwhile, dropped to 4-12 as they begin a trip through North Carolina that continues at Davidson on Tuesday.
Mims and Stupienski had three hits apiece and drove in four and three runs, respectively. Stupienski belted his third homer of the season and was joined by Feight, who belted his sixth round tripper of the season on a grand slam.
Robbie Thorburn added two hits and scored three runs, while raising his stolen base total to nine with a pair of steals.
Cory Gantz (1-0) picked up the win after making his first start of the season. The junior went a career-long five innings and allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits and pair of walks. He finished with three strikeouts.
UNCW broke open a 3-1 lead with six runs in the fourth and five more in the fifth for a 14-7 lead. Feight’s grand slam highlighted the six-run outburst and Stupienski did the same in the fifth with a two-run blast.
