Man, 72, dies following head-on wreck Saturday on River Road is your source for free news and information in the Wilmington area.

A Wilmington man has been identified as the victim in a fatal wreck reported Saturday evening on River Road in New Hanover County.

Dennis Edmonds, 72, died at the hospital after his vehicle was hit head-on in a wreck on River Road near River Oaks Drive just before 8 p.m. Saturday, according to N.C. State Highway Patrol Sgt. E.C. Harris.

A Mitsubishi SUV driven by 57-year-old George Allen Solomon was headed north on River Road, when his vehicle crossed the center line and struck Edmonds’ Chevy sedan head-on as he was traveling south, Harris said. A Toyota SUV, driven by 73-year-old Karen Hagan, then struck Solomon’s SUV after the initial impact.

Edmonds and his passenger, 73-year-old Geraldine Edmonds, were taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center for treatment. Solomon was also taken to the hospital. Hagen, of Wilmington, was not transported to the hospital by EMS, Harris said.

Dennis Edmonds later died at the hospital. According to New Hanover Regional Medical Center Director of Public Relations Martha Harlan, Geraldine Edmonds was listed in fair condition Monday afternoon. Solomon was listed in serious condition.

The fatal wreck is still under investigation, Harris said. No charges have been filed in the wreck at this time.
