Tarja Liisa Tuulikki ‘Tuuli’ Kekkonen Foy, 70, of Scotts Hill, passed away Saturday, March 5, 2016. Tuuli was born in Helsinki, Finland, on August 19, 1945, to the late Vaino and Hilma Kekkonen. She was also preceded in death by her grandson, Chase Miller Smith.

Tuuli graduated from the University of Helsinki with a teaching certificate. She taught elementary school for one year before she was recruited and hired as an international flight attendant with Pan American Airways. After being based in several cities around the United States, her final base was in Washington, D.C., where she met her husband, Bob.

They were married in 1974 and lived and raised their girls in the Northern Virginia area. Over the years, they enjoyed and took every opportunity to travel the world together. In addition to traveling, Tuuli was a talented artist and floral designer. After her husband’s retirement in 2000, they returned to make their home in Scotts Hill, where Bob’s family originated. At this time, she became very involved with the Lydia Abbey Craft Circle at Wesleyan Chapel. She especially enjoyed spending time with family, grandchildren, friends and cruising with her husband.

Tuuli is survived by her husband, Robert L. Foy III; daughters Kristiina Foy Long (Samuel E Long III) and Jennifer Foy Smith (Jonathan Smith); grandchildren, Carson, Jade and Miller Smith and Bobby and Samantha Long; and a sister and niece in Finland, Kaarina and Riitta Nieminen.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 9, at Wesleyan Chapel UMC, 10255 Hwy 17, Wilmington. A private family burial will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCareCenter, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401.
