The Seahawks advanced with last night’s win over Northeastern to tonight’s Colonial Athletic Association Men’s Basketball tournament championship game against top-seeded Hofstra.
This will be the Seahawks’ 10th CAA title game appearance and first since 2006. The Seahawks, CAA members since 1985-86, have won four CAA crowns (2000, 2002, 2003, 2006).
UNCW and Hofstra will be facing each other for the fifth time in the CAA finale. The Seahawks won the first two matchups in 2003 and 2006 – both championship seasons – and Hofstra has taken two straight in 2009 and 2014. In their last meeting in the CAA Tournament, the Pride won, 78-70, on March 7, 2014, in Richmond.
UNCW and Hofstra, who tied for the CAA regular-season title (Hofstra won the league tiebreaker for the top tournament seed), split regular-season meetings with each rallying from a large deficit to win on the other’s court. UNCW won 70-67 at Hofstra Feb. 4 after trailing by 20 points late during the opening half. Hofstra overcame an 18-point late first period deficit to win 70-69 Feb. 25 at UNCW.
Follow Port City Daily Sports Reporter Joe Catenacci, who will be courtside and reporting live to see if the Seahawks can take the 2016 crown.
