New Hanover 5 Cardinal Gibbons 4
The preseason favorites to win the Mideastern Conference in tennis passed an early season test against formidable foe Cardinal Gibbons as the Wildcats grabbed a 5-4 victory on the courts at New Hanover High School on Friday.
Marshall Waren guided a strong effort in singles play as the Wildcats took four individual matches and one doubles contest. Waren cruised to a 6-0, 6-4 straight set win in his 2016 debut.
Lucas McLatchy, Taylor Gaines and Wesley Gaines also earned results, while McLatchy and Wesley Gaines took the doubles contest on the No. 3 court.
Hoggard 8 Pinecrest 1
The Vikings opened the season with a convincing home victory at the Port City Invitational. Freshmen Holland Baynard and Jake Ferner each won in straight sets at No. 4 and 5, respectively.
Hoggard finishes the tournament with a pair of home matches on Saturday. They take on Cardinal Gibbons at 9 a.m. and Summerville (S.C.) at 2 p.m.

Purnell Swett 16 Ashley 6
Ashley was the only local baseball team to get its game in on Friday due to the inclement weather, but the Screaming Eagles dropped a 16-6 road contest at Purnell Swett.
Purnell Swett scored four runs in the bottom of the first before Ashley cut the deficit to within one during their next at-bat. Evan Laverick hit a bases clearing three-run double in the frame and finished 2-for-2 at the plate.
However, the home team continued to swing the bats and grabbed a 11-3 lead after three full innings of play.
The Screaming Eagles fell to 1-1 overall and entertain Cape Fear High School on Tuesday, March 8.

Chloe Whitaker scored off an assist from Jess Bennion and Emma Haywood notched the game-winner on a penalty kick to lift Hoggard in a 2-1 result over Cardinal Gibbons on Friday.
Salem College commit Hannah Wagner also made three saves for the Vikings, who moved to 2-0 on the young season.

Baley Edwards, Anna Rae Porcelli, Vivian Jones and Haley Shand all scored goals for Laney in a 4-4 draw with Fike. Sydney Young made 11 stops in net, while Shand, Porcelli and Jones each picked up an assist.

Four different players found the back of the net for Ashley in a 4-0 result against Hopewell. Haven Lewis, Carly Higgins, Lindsey Williams and Tess Cairney all tallied for the Screaming Eagles.

Carmen Pyrtle and Jamie Keisman had two goals each for the Pirates. Hayley Childress also made two saves in teh shutout.
