Stephen Melvin Herring Sr., 81, of Burgaw, died on February Tuesday, 23, 2016, in Stuart, Fla. Steve was born on October 30, 1934, in Harrells.

He was the third of four children born to the late Winnie Louise Mathis Herring Matthews and William James Herring. He was also preceded in death by his brother, J.R. Herring; sisters, Elma Boone and Shelby Evans; and grandson, Brent Gaskin.

His passion was being on the river and fishing, especially for large catfish. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his children, Stephen M. Herring Jr., of Manteca, Calif., Melvin (Butch) Herring of Stuart, Fla., and Alesia Powell (Rick) of Hampstead; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, March 4, at Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Service. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 5, at Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Service Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, or a charity of ones choice.
