Detectives with the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office are investigating a report of a fake traffic stop conducted by a male suspect in the southern part of the county.

The victim was stopped by a man in a white vehicle with blue lights in the area of Cathay and River roads at about 1 a.m. Wednesday, according to New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Jason Augst. The suspect walked up to the victim’s vehicle and asked to see his license and registration.

The victim, who was suspicious of the stop, refused to give the suspect his identification and called 911, Augst said. The suspect got back into the car and drove away.

The vehicle is described as a white Nissan Altima or Maxima equipped with blue lights. The suspect is described as a white male in his early 40s. He wore black pants, a white polo shirt and a brown handgun in a holster.

If anyone sees the suspect or the vehicle matching the descriptions, deputies are urging citizens to dial 911.
