Thurman Bass Jr., 79, of Wilmington, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends Sunday, February 21, 2016. He was the son of the late Thurman Bass Sr. and Brookie Ward Bass.

Thurman was born in Columbus County on October 25, 1936, and later moved to New Hanover County, where he attended school and graduated from New Hanover High School before enlisting in the U.S. Navy, where he served proudly in Germany and Korea. Thurman was an active and lifetime member of the Church of the Good Shepherd and VFW Post 2573.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Louise Sellers; and brother, Harold Lloyd Bass.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Elizabeth Irene Bass; son, David Alan Bass (Pamela); daughters, Patricia McClanahan (Bill) and Barbara Elaine Bass (Robbie); brother, Jimmy W. Bass (Irene); and first cousin, Samuel R. Sinclair (Becky).

Thurman dearly loved his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and his many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 4, at the Church of the Good Shepherd, 515 Queen St., Wilmington. A private graveside service will be held by the family at a later date.
