Francis John Whelan, age 80, of Wilmington, died on Wednesday, February 24, 2016, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
He was born on February 15, 1936, in Long Island City, N.Y., and was the son of the late Francis and the late Irene (Foote) Whelan. Francis was also preceded in death by his daughter, Cynthia Mitchell; brother, Joseph Whelan; and sister, Irene Kalb.
He graduated from William Bryant High School in Long Island City, N.Y., and was a police officer with New York Police Department for 22 years. His last precinct was No. 114, and in his 22 years as a police officer, his accomplishments were past president and charter member of 10-13 Club of Wilmington, member of NYC Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association, NYPD Honor Legion, NYPD Emerald Society Fraternal Order of Police, N.H. City Law Enforcement Officers, Elks – Wilmington B.PO No. 532.
Francis is survived by his wife of 22 years, Loretta (Lambert) Whelan of Wilmington; one son, John Whelan of Babylon; a daughter, Kerriann Spirides of Wesley Chapel, Fla.; stepdaughter, Christine Stenzel, and her husband, Gary, of Tampa, Fla.; and grandchildren, Katie and Ava Spirides of Wesley Chapel, Fla., and Jenna, Austin and Grayson Stenzel of Tampa, Fla.
A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, March 4, at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 1219 Forest Hill Drive, Wilmington, NC. 28403 with the Rev. Dr. Thomas C. Barnett, D.Min., Ph.D., officiating. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 10 to 11 a.m.
The family requested memorial donations be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church, 1219 Forest Hill Drive, Wilmington, NC 28403.
