Laney, West Brunswick wrestlers claim individual state championships

Area grapplers representing Laney, West Brunswick, Hoggard, South Brunswick and Ashley High Schools competed at the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) Individual Wrestling Championships this weekend at Greensboro Coliseum.

Sixteen wrestlers from across the state qualified for each weight class among NCHSAA 4A/3A/2A/1A classifications, with weigh-ins and first-round action getting underway on Thursday.

Of the 24 local competitors, Kevin Saravia (Laney), Harrison Campbell (West Brunswick) and Tyrone Watson (North Brunswick) moved on from day two and competed for a state title on Saturday.

A two-time regional winner, Saravia earned his first championship at 113 pounds after his final round opponent forfeited because of injury. Campbell claimed a 3A crown at 120 pounds, while Watson finished as a runner-up after falling by major decision 14-5 to Evan Markupson in the 2A Tournament.

In the 4A bracket, William Adame (106 pounds, Ashley), Kevin Saravia (113 pounds, Laney), David Bostian (138 pounds, Laney), Austin Harrison (145 pounds, Laney) and Alex Willis (285 pounds, Laney) advanced into Friday’s quarterfinals.

Saravia won 7-4 to move onto the semifinals along with Willis following a 3-1 victory at 285 pounds. Saravia was the only local wrestler to clinch a spot in Saturday’s 4A finals. He won by decision in the quarterfinals and outlasted Ben Long (Alexander Central) to secure a spot in the championship match.

Harrison Campbell (120 pounds), Lincoln Smith (145 pounds), Peyton Tipton (152 pounds), and Nate Gilbert (220 pounds) clinched a spot in the round of eight from West Brunswick in the 3A bracket. Campbell won by fall in the quarterfinals along with Nate Gilbert at 220 pounds.

  North Brunswick had three competitors move through in the 2A individual tournament, including Patrick Burton (152 pounds), Darnel Brooks (160 pounds) and Tyrone Watson (182 pounds).

  • 4A 113 pounds:1st Place Match – Kevin Saravia (Laney) 40-4 won by forfeit over Josh Lehr (Holly Springs) 37-1 (For.)
  • 3A 120 pounds: 1st Place Match – Harrison Campbell (West Brunswick) 42-1 won by decision over Phil Daub (Enka) 54-5 (Dec 8-3)
  • 2A 182 pounds: 1st Place Match – Evan Makupson (Thomasville) 47-0 won by major decision over Tyrone Watson (North Brunswick) 47-4 (MD 14-5)
