Local product Steven Linkous and Robbie Thorburn had three hits apiece and UNCW plated 10 runs in the fifth inning as the Seahawks gave Head Coach Mark Scalf his 800th career win with a 15-2 victory at Brooks Field on Friday.
UNCW plated 10 runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth to overcome an early 2-1 deficit to Western Carolina. Thirteen Seahawks made their way to the plate in the big inning, which was highlighted by a two-run homer off the bat of Nick Feight.
Adding two-hit games for the Seahawks were Gavin Stupienski and Terence Connelly. Linkous scored three runs and belted a bases-clearing triple in the fifth inning. Thorburn scored twice and stole a base.
WCU was limited to four hits on the afternoon by a combination of five Seahawk hurlers. Senior pitcher Ryan Foster (1-0) earned the win, with five innings of two-run, three-hit baseball. He walked two and fanned five.
UNCW went 9-for-25 with runners on base. Linkous and Feight five combined two-out RBI’s as UNCW totaled seven for the game. The Seahawks’ bullpen allowed one hit, walked two and struck out three over four innings of work.
Brendan Nail (0-1) suffered the loss for the Catamounts, allowing five runs on four hits, walked four and struck out four over 4.2 innings. Western Carolina was 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position and 1-for-14 with runners on base.
UNCW takes on St. John’s at Brooks Field at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
