John William ‘Jack’ Mills, 70, ‘greatest joy was cheering on his grandchildren’

John Williams “Jack”  Mills, age 70, died suddenly at home on Monday, February 15, 2016. Jack was born in Englewood, N.J., on October 26, 1945. He was raised in Middletown, N.Y., and Westfield, N.J., where he graduated from Westfield High School. He attended Fairleigh Dickinson University and had a successful career in banking and insurance, retiring from Mutual of New York.

Jack was an avid golfer, multiple-year club champion, and he ran the Junior Golf Program in Scotch Plains, N.J. He officiated the U.S. Swimming, YMCA and Westfield Outdoor Swim League competitions, where he proudly watched his children swim. In his retirement, one of his greatest joys was cheering on his grandchildren in all their sporting endeavors.

Jack was preceded in death by his loving son, David J. Mills; and his brother, Joseph F. Mills. He is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Susan W. Mills; his beloved daughter, Mary Beth, and  her husband, Bradley; granddaughter, Sara Elizabeth; and grandson, Matthew David.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. this Sunday, February 21, at the Southport Presbyterian Church, 1025 E. Moore Street. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jack’s memory to support the St. James EMS. Contributions may be sent to St. James Fire Department 3628 St. James Drive, Southport, NC 28461.
