Sandra Austin Gunter, 67, of Wilmington, died suddenly on Saturday, February 6, 2016, at Cape Fear Hospital. Born Nov. 26, 1948, in Albemarle, Sandra was the oldest of three children born to Robert W. Austin Jr. and Marcelle L. Austin.

Preceded in death by her father, and her cousin, Labon Saunders, Sandra is survived by her husband of 34 years, Steve M. Gunter; her daughter, “Marcy” Coleman; two grandsons, Jon-Austin and Chandler Coleman; her mother, Marcelle L. Austin; a sister, Sydney Austin (Jack); a brother, Robert W. Austin III; a nephew, Jot Owens IV (Melissa); and Lynn Clewis of Rockingham, who was like a sister to Sandra.

Sandra enjoyed helping others and worked for years on the staff of Homestead Instead Senior Care of Wilmington. Sandra also leaves behind close extended family and friends, who fondly remember her as an avid reader. Her quiet demeanor concealed from many an adventurous spirit that led her to many exotic destinations around the globe, including walking the Great Wall of China, strolling the beaches of Fiji and visiting East Berlin before the Wall’s historic destruction. She loved hot air balloon rides and once ascended over Sedona, Arizona.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 13, 2016 at Wrightsville Beach United Methodist Church, 4 Live Oak Drive, Wrightsville Beach, led by the Rev. Doug Lain. After the service, Sandra’s family will receive friends at 504 Sericea Court, Wilmington.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial donations be made in Sandra’s name to the Cape Fear Literacy Council or the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. Sandra’s family wishes to thank Dr. Collins of Cape Fear Hospital and the emergency room staff, including VitaLink, for their tireless efforts.
