Local swimmers place in top 10 at state swimming and diving championships

The North Carolina High School Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championships were held at Triangle Aquatic Center on Friday as New Hanover, Topsail, South Brunswick, Hoggard, Ashley and West Brunswick High Schools had competitors make the trip to Cary.

In the 4A meet, Brenna Divoky of Ashley High School placed sixth in the 100 yard breaststroke, while New Hanover’s Anthony Messina took 13th in 100 yard freestyle.

Jacob Hannum, Carter Howe, Adam Coleman and Finn Howard represented Hoggard in the 200 yard freestyle relay, while Aleta Jewell, Lucy Gittings, Brynn Jewell and Rhianne Hsu swam for New Hanover in 400 yard freestyle relay.

South Brunswick sent 10 swimmers to the 3A meet and the Cougars had top 10 finishes in five separate events. The South Brunswick boys placed ninth as a team out of 48 programs represented at the meet.

Matt Anselmo, Chris Anselmo, Owen Bell and Tyler Bowersox placed fourth in the 200 yard freestyle relay. They combined for a 1:31.73 performance, two seconds behind third-place J.M. Robinson High School.

The same quartet took eighth in the 200 yard medley relay, while Chris Anselmo finished 13th in 100 yard freestyle. Bowersox was fourth in 100 yard breaststroke, ninth in 100 yard butterfly and McKenzie White placed 13th in the butterfly.  White also took ninth in 100 yard backstroke and 100 yard backstroke. Matt Anselmo was 11th in 100 yard breaststroke.

Hannah Scharf, Elizabeth Palmquist, McKenzie White and Bailey Road swam in the 200 yard freestyle relay and 200 medley relay, with an 11th and 12th place outing, respectively.

Topsail’s Delaney Poppella turned in an 11th place performance in 50 yard freestyle. Teammate Drew Marshall grabbed 14th in 100 yard freestyle and Dustin Ruppart (West Brunswick) placed 11th in 500 yard freestyle.

Danielle Swiss, Kelsey Eaves, Drew Marshall and Delaney Popella swam in the 200 yard freestyle relay for the Pirates. Topsail’s Payton Rice, Gavin Finley, Mason Sessions and Brandon Croom also competed in 200 yard freestyle relay.
